Yellow nails are most commonly the result of a fungal infection which makes plenty of sense as your hands and feet come into contact with all kinds of potentially infectious bacteria.
In rare situations yellow nails can indicate the presence of skin. In some cases nails that remain yellow despite repeated treatment can be a symptom of thyroid conditions psoriasis or diabetes. This can signify many underlying issues from something as simple as nail polish staining to more serious health conditions. Although they can occur as a result of smoking or tanning yellow fingernails may also hint at an infection or vitamin deficiency.
