The difference between a meteor and a meteorite is important to know as people often think both these terms mean the same. The names are so similar it s easy to get mixed up between meteors meteoroids and meteorites.
It was formed several thousand years ago by a 250 000 tonne meteorite with a diameter of 70 metres hitting the earth at a speed of nearly 60 000 km h. These smaller pieces of rock are called meteoroids. A meteroid is an object which is smaller than any asteroid or comet infact a meteor is also a meteroid. Meteors are debris considered to be part of the solar system and they can either burn up hit the ground or deflect off the earth s atmosphere.
However if that meteor makes it to the earth s ground without being destroyed then it is then called a meteorite. A small body starts its life as a meteoroid floating through space between the planets until it makes a bright streak of light in earth s atmosphere as a meteor and then if it isn t consumed by frictional heating finally lands on the ground as a meteorite. Their difference is location. A meteor is a heavenly body consisting of small pieces of stonesand metallic rocks.

Meteoroids can be as small as a grain of sand or. When meteoroids enter earth s atmosphere or that of another planet like mars at high speed and burn up the fireballs or shooting stars are called meteors. While meteorites are meteors which hit the surface of the earth after their flight. Sometimes asteroids can bump into each other in space and this can mean small pieces break off.
