What Is The Difference Between Easter And Orthodox Easter
Camila Farah
The main difference between eastern orthodoxy and eastern rite catholicism is ecclesiological it has to do with what each perceives the nature and structure of the church to be.
But in 2008 catholic easter was march 23 and orthodox easter was april 27. Unless i m mistaken the assumption of mary is also part of orthodox belief but not due to any statement of a pope. Catholic easter can fall on any date between march 22 and april 25 and orthodox easter falls on any date between april 4 and may 8. Eastern orthodox christianity predates protestantism by about 500 years.
Then we have a feast but more on that in a bit. The two biggest differences between the catholic faith and the eastern orthodox faith boils down to two main disputes. The filioque controversy in which the text of the nicene creed was altered during the 6th century to include and the son. Their core beliefs are similar to those of catholicism.
There are also many cultural and ritual differences between the churches such as prayers vestments and liturgies but many of these also exist between the eastern and western particular churches of the catholic church. Easter continues to be celebrated on two different dates depending on which church you belong to. In fact the creeds of the two denominations are nearly identical. The orthodox church marks pascha according to the julian calendar while easter is marked by the gregorian calendar.
