What Is The Difference Between A Hub And A Switch
Camila Farah
Both pass data between devices connected to them.
A hub a switch is used to connect various network segments. Switches are higher performance alternatives to hubs. A hub is a networking device that allows you to connect multiple pcs to a single network whereas a switch connects various devices together on a single computer network. Hub have maximum 4 ports.
Routers are essentially small computers that perform a variety of intelligent tasks. Each port of a hub is a collision domain and each port of a switch is a broadcast domain. It doesn t broadcast the packet to all computers as a hub does which means bandwidth is not shared and makes the network much more efficient. Where the switch differs from a hub is in the way it handles packets of data.
Key differences between hub and switch the hub operates on the physical layer of the osi while a switch works on the datalink layer of the osi. On the other hand in a switch the dedicated bandwidth is provided to the ports. Difference between hub vs switch a hub is a case where the devices are connected and gathered in a certain physical location whereas a switch is a case where the network connection of multiple devices are centralized in a specific location. A hub forwards frames and a switch forwards only packets.

When a switch receives data it determines the destination and sends it directly to that device. In hub there is only one collision domain. A switch knows a little bit about the devices that are plugged into each of its ports and uses that information to send network traffic that it receives from one device directly to the destination device. A switch on the other hand is essentially an intelligent hub.
While switch is a unicast multicast and broadcast type transmission. Hub is operated on physical layer. Hub shares the bandwidth between the ports. Hubs are dumb devices that pass on anything received on one connection to all other connections.
This causes less congestion on the network and is more secure than a hub. Function of a switch vs. While switch is operated on data link layer. Hubs do so by broadcasting the data to all other connected devices while switches first determine which device is the intended recipient of the data and then send it to that one device directly via a so called virtual.
