Worse case they get mastitis that if not treated can lead to death.
Well the answer is. What happens if you don t milk cows. Can you imagine what happens on a farm where the farmer prohibits work on a sunday. If a dairy cow s calf is taken away to increase milk production and you suddenly stop milking her she will continue to produce milk at a rate of eight gallons a day.
If a cow isn t milked at least once a day the build up of pressure in her udder causes great discomfort and could lead to skin rupture and serious conditions like mastitis. It is not a pretty death. That s why milking is an everyday job. What happens to a cow if you don t milk it.
If a cow isn t milked by humans or robotic milkers provided by humans but it does feed its calf then its milk supply will adjust to be sufficient to the calf s needs. Eventually the calf will begin to eat grass hay or feed and in time it will wean and the cow s milk supply will dry up gradually. Naturally this causes the udder to swell painfully. If the cow has recently freshened it can make her very ill and cause mastitis.

Not milking a dairy cow causes many serious problems. If a cow just gave birth or is breed to have a very high milk production not milking would cause pressure to build up in the udder which can lead to infections and cause great discomfort. If it s a dairy cow they produce waaaay more milk than is necessary for the survival of their offspring. They can and do get mastitis which is an infection in the udder from not being milked and mastitis can kill them.
