Your labour may not start for hours or even days after you lose the mucus plug. The mucus plug accumulates at the cervix during pregnancy. Or you could already be in early labour. Losing your mucus plug could mean labor is imminent or that it s still weeks away.
Losing your mucus plug is usually a sign that labour will begin soon or has already begun. Most women lose their mucus plug as the body starts preparing for delivery. Your mucus plug is a jelly like seal that closes off your cervix to prevent infection. But it doesn t mean labor is imminent unless you also have contractions or your water breaks.
You may lose it all at once or gradually and without notice. Losing it can be an early sign of labor. Effacement is when the cervix thins and stretches while dilation is when it opens. When the cervix begins to open wider the mucus is discharged into the vagina and may be clear pink or slightly bloody.

The loss of the mucus plug especially when there s a little bit of blood is usually a good indicator that labor is. It is after all one of the main lines of defense between your womb and the outside world. When a person loses their mucus plug it may mean that labor will begin soon. That said losing your mucus plug before week 37 in your pregnancy may mean that you re dilating or otherwise going into labor.
