The scriptural account surrounding jesus birth tells of wise men traveling a great distance from the east to present the young christ child with gifts. The wise men likely presented frankincense as a perfume or oil to be used for jesus. Why did the wise men bring gold frankincense and myrrh to bethlehem as gifts to jesus. These gifts were not typical gifts for a baby though they did have practical uses for jesus family.
To matthew 2 11 they brought three gifts to the baby jesus. Why did the magi bring gold frankincense and myrrh to jesus answer. Perhaps the wise men intended this gift as an indication of jesus humanity and the manner in which he would save his people namely that he would die for them cf. They inquired of king herod where they might find him saying where is he who has been born king of the jews.
Why did the magi bring gold. The names were assigned to the three wise men based on the nations from which the three gifts most likely originated not from any scriptural source the assumption that they were three in number is assumed. Gold was an acknowledgement of jesus kingship while frankincense represented his future role as priest. Myrrh has been used throughout history in a variety of ways.

Matthew 2 tells us that the magi or wise men travelled from the east in search of the christ child. According to the book of matthew the three magi subsequently identified as caspar melchior and balthazar gave the christ child three gifts. The three wise men also known as the magi are said to have followed the star of bethlehem to bring three gifts to baby jesus. Why did the wise men bring gifts to jesus.
Like the frankincense in the old testament jesus would be given up as an offering for the sins of humanity.
