Snapping turtles have claws on the front feet and webbed back feet and also are recognized by their hooked jaws.
Turtles with claws are land dwelling and use the claws to dig. Look for the color markings and the small flat feet to tell them apart. Painted turtles have a relatively flat olive or black colored shell. There are turtles that have relatively longer necks.
If a turtle has webbed feet it is a species that lives in water for most or all of its time. Some turtles have colouring such as yellow throats or red lines on their necks. Another way to identify which kind of turtle you have is by looking at its neck. Box turtles for instance have long necks that stretch far out of their shells.
Many turtles have distinct carapace shapes or markings that can be used to identify them. A snapping turtle on the other hand has a neck so short that it could not go outside the shell. Some turtles are very small and don t grow bigger than your hand such as the stink pot or slightly bigger is the spotted turtle.
